The Creative Block is administered by Spier Arts Trust, presenting artists who’ve been accepted to participate in the programme. Since 2004 more than 250 artists have contributed to The Creative Block. The artists are given blank blocks of various sizes and transform them in any way they wish, using any media they wish. The Creative Block provides Southern African artists - both established and emerging - with the opportunity to earn income immediately; expand their artistic territory and have a platform from which to experiment. Artworks are submitted for critique and the best are purchased for resale to patrons and the general public. It is an artist career development opportunity because of the Chief Curator's critique, which is akin to a master class.
Motivation Each block is a unique artwork with the artists biography on the back. Blocks are sold at a standard price, so collectors have the rare opportunity of purchasing affordable, original works. The format invites creative play for collectors as they curate their own meaning by selecting artworks to contrast and complement each other, adding, and rearranging according to changing tastes and environments. The result is a collection of artwork similar in size only each block reflects a unique artistic experience and style; displayed together these become a newly created, single artwork.
